GOJIRA TAI MEKAGOJIRA (1974) ** Somewhere in the past, not so long ago, some creative genius of a particular ilk realized that certain elements add pizzazz to any story at all, particularly when mixed and in any mixture. Not so much a formula as a list of ingredients that work no matter what (aliens, vampires, monsters, etc.). This discovery was not held as an esoteric secret, as it contained the inherent ability to translate itself by mere manifestation. Now everyone knows, and we get films like this. Which I think is good. Aliens from the Third Planet of the Black Hole represent the usual cohort out to subvert Tokyo, and construct a fake robot Godzilla to do their evil bidding. It's somewhat confusing that at first it looks like Godzilla proper, but once it morphs into a metal-lookin' thing that straightens out. One can only look on in amazement at how readily good scientists are able to identify “space titanium,” and there is no cause for disappointment in the typically eccentric priorities of the Godzilla news station. It's a long time between battle scenes, which is a bummer, but when the Godzillas do go at it they're joined by King Caesar, apparently the result of a sensual union between dragon and dog, with the odd recessive horn-genes of a triceratops mixed in there somewhere. I'm glad word got out, and I'm glad that now everyone can make films like this. Punk rock creative ideology.
