KILLER TOMATOES EAT FRANCE ! (1991) ** I've read people debating themselves over which Killer Tomato movie is the best. I'll not subject you to that sort of nonsense, no there's enough nonsense in the film to satisfy even my own admirably immense quota tolerance threshold group. It's also an opening to establish my intellectual credentials by assuring you that I don't sit around contemplating these films in great detail once they're over, and my street cred by admitting that I pretty much enjoy them all. There's really no reason that the British should have all the fun of making fun of French people, and so here the Californians take a turn. Of course their satire is rather less sublime, and instead consists of rather loud and American clichés believed to relate to France amplified and strained through the lack of aesthetic conscience and restraint of a particularly witty clutch of class clowns. The determination in linking the assortment of many odd threads together into the fabric of something resembling a plot is admirable, and the emotion evoked when at times they actually remember to string them together is one not entirely unrelated to admiration. The jokes come hard and heavy, and if they tend more towards clever than funny then maybe you're just a silly person over-analyzing the humour dynamic of a Killer Tomato movie. If you just look at the screen without worrying about what's going on it's almost always funny. So there! The KT braintrust thinks that they've cast a palate with ample room upon which to consider the works and implications of Dvorák (whom they no doubt believe to be French), Jacques Offenbach, da Vinci (um, not French either guys, but we get the idea) and all those other people like that.well, maybe someone should have stopped them but since they didn't we are now forced to concede that they created something that we have not. Demands a remake so that they can contrast the Freedom Fries nonsense with their innate and healthy distrust of all things military ("Uncle Francois wants YOU!" haha, what idiot would fall for that.)
