OUTLAW JUSTICE (1999) **1/2 Everybody has a favorite cowboy, and this film includes all three of mine. Unfortunately, after opening the festivities with a great, great line, they kill off Waylon Jennings-the greatest cowboy of 'em all-before the opening credits. Wal, truth is Waylon was a little bit past his outlaw days, and he does pepper the rest of the film with outstanding narration, the way he done "The Dukes of Hazzard." Now Willie Nelson an' Kris Kristofferson, though, their outlaw days might never end, an' Gene Quintano gives 'em some damn good lines to prove it. They do look every bit the badasses capable of levelling any bar full of anybody, and that Willie's comedic timing just improves every time. Travis Tritt's in there, too, with authentic country idiosyncrasies. I imagine he's somebody's favorite cowboy, too, though they're a bit younger than myself, I imagine. The glorious and most temperamental opening 15 minutes give way to a plot where there most isn't one, but that's no reason you can't enjoy Kris lookin' at banks like a wolf at a bar-b-q, or Willie lookin' at drinks and women in much the same way. Willie an' Kris coulda took them Paul Newman and Robert Redford fellas any day. Before lunch.
