RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND (1965) ** As a writer Jack Nicholson sets his stake in the common realism of the everyday mistake. As an actor he stays so true to the nondescript cowboy script that there's no reason to suspect that some day he's going to morph into Jack Nicholson . I have no difficulty seeing how someone might think this is an incredibly brilliant film, but it doesn't do all that much for me. I don't fail to notice realism in everyday life, and I'm not sure how much things have really changed. Of course, I don't know that Jack does either, and there's plenty that could be said about curtains and set pieces. Few go wrong, but everyone not on the inside is running, either by design or weakness or...you know, tramps like us baby we were born to run.
