SABRINA, DOWN UNDER (1999) *1/2 Nice film for a slow afternoon. I mean, there's not much plot, the acting is all pretty bad, there isn't any high drama... You can't get mad at them, they're gently trying to point children in the direction of environmentalism, and there are no aesthetic pretensions whatsoever. It's one of those films for young girls whose total concept of a dream world is one where everyone has a nice big boyfriend. Towards that end they're presented Scott Michaelson, who even has a pet-like name, "Barnaby." Actually, his performance and that of Lindsay Sloane could be the beginning of a thesis that mermaid people are all really bad actors, but again, in this film it doesn't really matter much, and he looks the part. I think the robotic cats are kind of funny, too.
