SCOOBY-DOO AND THE RELUCTANT WEREWOLF (1988) *1/2 I like Dracula's helicopter with the flappy wings. That's the best part. The rest of it is subpar, creatively, for even a garden variety cartoon, much less the venerable Scooby franchise. Dropping the rest of the gang and leaving Scoob and Shag with Scrappy and Shag's irritating girlfriend (yeah, yeah, what other kind...) is a nearly fatal error in itself. The weird thing is, I was thinking this plot might actually work (at least better) with real actors, as they could breathe some life into the mutliple celebrity monsters (witches, Nessie, the Frankensteins, Vampira, etc.) that the animators don't. Not that it's a good plot either, I don't mean that. It's mainly a bunch of clichés strung together, with slivers of originality used as a filament where they don't quite line up right. It's a passable and relaxing way to spend some time on a weekend afternoon (definitely nap bait), and maybe I'm wrong for expecting more than that out of a talking dog cartoon....nah!
