SHREK THE HALLS (2007) **1/2 Same characters, you already know 'em and probably like at least one of 'em. Eddie Murphy is sooo irritating as the donkey-and I'm too self centered to buy into that stuff about putting up with people you can't stand just because it's a holiday-and so it's an absolutely triumphant scene where Antonio Banderas' stupid cat steals the show. Of course Eddie has his moments, because you can't give him even this few tries without him landing a punchline.or intonation, more like it, rhythm intonation. Anyway, it has a good irascible Christmas feel that's easier to generate than that warm more important one. But safer, and doesn't miss. And some clown down a corporate rat goonhole could argue that it's inherently less offensive to artificially re-create and mimic something insignificant and philosophically miniscule; and while I have to admit they know all about that, they'd still be wrong. Because the lesser included inherent inoffensiveness is trumped by ties that bind, and we weren't put here to act like chickens, or donkeys.
