UNCLE BUCK (1989) *1/2 John Candy was such a wonderful character actor: ramblin', gamblin', irresponsible and irrepressible puppy dog of a man. So why would anyone think that putting that same character into a hamstrung role-babysitting, no less-would be a good idea? I guess it could have worked if John had somehow transcended the societal constraints set to bind him, but instead he just gets weird and demonstrates why his signature character was entirely unequipped for the situation. It's more stupid than over- or under-played, but Amy Madigan does a nice turn as the tire saleswoman desperate enough to see something in him.
