VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (1961) * Early on someone says something like "Jules Verne never thought of anything like this," and they're right, but it isn't an indictment of the man. The most interesting thing about it is trying to figure out how it can be so dull with so many actors that are usually entertaining. Peter Lorre is only vaguely interesting, but he's the best of the lot. Joan Fontaine is downright frumpy as the misguided psychiatrist, but as much credit for the effect should go to wardrobe and her hairstylist. Whether or not jail terms would be appropriate will be a question for each to decide on their own, and the film gives you plenty of time to ponder such things. Even Barbara Eden is downright dull, and the temptation to blame the entire thing on Frankie Avalon is too forgiving of everyone else. Yes, he sets the pace with his putrid song, but he didn't write the monstrosity and they hardly ever even let him stick his face in. They're probably trying to say something about perseverance, but anyone who makes it to the end already knows the lesson beyond anything depicted.
