WELCOME TO MOOSEPORT (2004) *1/2 Marcia Gay Harden doesn't seem like any great catch, but you have to feel sorry for her given her choice of suitors: drab plumber Ray Romano and Gene Hackman, an ex-president of the recent mold. I can understand how someone thought it might be funny, probably even laughed a lot, to have the winds of fate force Gene to run for mayor of a small town in Maine against the plumber, but it doesn't get any funnier than that. In fact it never gets even that funny, you have to do the heavy thinking on your own. Christine Baranski has her moments as the ex-president's ex (could any alimony be enough to keep her away? Essentially brilliant again in the same roll as Bulworth , but with more time to work it baby work it), but it's probably mainly a film for those who need to convince themselves that everything Gene's ever in isn't great.
