THE WOLVES OF WILLOUGHBY CHASE (1988) * Not terribly realized, but thoroughly depressing Dickens-stylie depiction of how cruel the British used to be to children. Of course things have supposedly improved, as Dickens hoped they might, but the sad reality is that the British continue to exhibit the worst attitude towards children in all of Europe , perhaps in the western world. The rights of children are too often nothing in England compared to the necessity of some incompetent clod of an adult saving face. Emily Hudson is a moving young actress, and I understand that she has precious little control over her own career at this point, but you hate to see her suffer in such a piece of crap. A fine film, then, for those determined to feel that there's no hope at all, that adults are not only inherently evil but have no hope of improvement, and then want a bullshit happy ending clipped onto the end. Nice costumes.
